LEADERSHIP & EMPOWERMENT
BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF LAWRENCE Academic Basketball Leadership Program
The Girls Academic Basketball Leadership Program provides opportunities for its participants to excel athletically and academically, develop positive relationships with adults, and acquire greater self-confidence and a sense of self-worth. Seventy five girls, in grades 5 - 12, distributed amongst 3 teams receive academic support and abide by the academic rigors necessary to play on the basketball teams.
ESPERANZA ACADEMY Student Leadership Program
The Student Leadership Program focuses on setting smart goals, studying women of consequence, participating in community service, and mentoring younger girls. Community service projects utilize the innovative “PeaceJam” curriculum which explores a dozen Nobel Peace Laureates and the ways they overcame problems in their communities. The students study the personal experiences of these world leaders and then engage in service-learning activities addressing local needs. www.EsperanzaAcademy.org
LYNN COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER Latina Health Support Program
The Latina Health Support Program empowers 20 young mothers, who have been victims of domestic violence, with knowledge to access services within the community of Lynn, to make good health decisions, to improve their emotional well being resulting in women who have regained self esteem and who may even seek to further their educaion or training. http://www.lchcnet.org
LYNN HOME FOR WOMEN In-house General
Educational Development (GED) program
The program provides in-house GED training, which is a necessary stepping stone to employment and financial independence for its women residents. The Lynn Home provides safe housing for young women fleeing abuse and or homelessness. A communal setting is fostered with hands on guidance, counseling services, meals, various instructional classes on life skill tools necessary to move forward on their own. www.lynnhome.org
NORTH SHORE COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION Strength Based
Transitions and Change Initiative
This initiative enhances the existing Women in Transition and Challenges, Choices and Change programs that support women who have been away from college for a long time or are first time college goers. These enhancements include a mentoring and tutoring system involving program graduates, financial literacy classes to foster financial stability and decreased debt, and emergency funds to help with unexpected transportation expenses which often prevent or impede the progress of women trying to gain independence and empowerment by completing the program. www.northshore.edu
RAW ART Women 2 Be, Art for Girlz
These two strong Girls Programs are carefully designed with the unique needs of girls in mind. The emphasis is to provide girls with a safe and vibrant environment, the support and mentoring of older girls, women and each other, and opportunities for the development of leadership and life skills. Both of these programs aim to counter the negative,demeaning and sex role stereotyped messages that girls receive through media, peer pressure or at home. SURVIVOR ART FOR EMPOWERMENT(S.A.F.E.) STUDIO Females at Risk
The Females at Risk program, the core of the work at Safe Studio, is attended by adult women victims of abuse who are out of immediate crisis and trying to piece their lives back together and and move forward. The program’s goal is to prevent future violence in their lives by helping them heal from the abuse they have endured and develop positive self self-esteem utilizing creative processes and therapeutic art as the tools.www.safestudio.org
THE SALEM MISSION (LIFEBRIDGE) The Women’s Program
The Women’s Program offers psycho-educational programing to empower its female clients with the self-sufficiency skills to overcome homelessness The program will expand and utilize community professionals to offer sessions on rape and crisis relief,reproductive healthcare, domestic abuse, financial literacy and advocacy,employment training , substance abuse and other issues that can assist these women ensure a secure future. www.lifebridgesalem.org
The YMCA of the North Shore Girls Today
Girls Today is a program that empowers young women to have greater self-esteem, gain knowledge to pursue goals and purposefully plan for a future. Teenagers need role models, sound advice and a place to turn when life is confusing.The program addresses topics such as peer pressure,dating, alcohol and drugs, proper nutrition, body image---the basic elements that girls need to feel good about themselves. Lectures and demonstrations from community leaders expand the girls horizons and show pathways to escape poverty. This program will be expanded at the Salem YMCA and implemented at the Haverhill YMCA www.northshoreymca.org
